If you are a lover of cricket as I am you will
thoroughly enjoy this DVD. I look forward each year to the test series and the one day
internationals. I have loved watching and playing cricket ever since I was young whipper
snapper sending them down in the back yard and have been lucky enough over the years to
watch on television some of the cricket greats such as Clive Lloyd, Richard Hadlee, Ian
Botham, Viv Richards, Geoff Lawson , Dean Jones and the list could go on and on. Over the
years there has been hundreds of great memorable moments, enough I think to fill hundreds
of DVDs. Channel Nine and Village Roadshow have gotten together and released a
handful of some of these performances and moments in a DVD entitled Cricket -
The Vintage Performances.
The DVD is a collection of 12 selected performances over the years and each one has
been given its own chapter so you can go straight to your chosen one very easily.
The performances are:-
- Mark Taylors 334
- The Miracle Match (Domestic 1 day match with Dennis Lillee cleaning up Qld)
- The Centenary Test Match
- The Gilchrist/Langer Test partnership
- Shane Warnes first ball in England (When he bowled Mike Gatting)
- The Waugh Twins Record
- Brian Laras First Test Century
- Bevans last ball 4 (Against W.I. in 1 day match to win the game for
Australia)
- Bevans Great Test Performance
- Greg Chappells last Test Innings
- The closest Test match in history
- Australian Hat-tricks (Merv Hughes, Shane Warne & Glen McGrath).
Each performance segment contains an introduction by Channel Nines Ken Sutcliffe
and the actual footage but also contains behind the scenes comments and interviews with
the actual players involved, channel nine commentators and team mates etc. Its great
to re-live these moments and listen to the stories and memories of the players themselves
over and over again and the DVD is the format of choice as you can look back upon these
moments many years later and watch them as many times as you like. |
So how does this transfer hold up?
.... |
VIDEO
As you would expect the video transfer is presented in full frame 4x3 mode
(Aspect ratio of 4x3). The transfer is of good quality but is obviously of broadcast
television quality. The interviews with the players which seem to be quite recent are
sharp and clear whilst some of the cricket footage of performances which occurred in the
70s or 80s are obviously a little soft looking hence the quality of cameras
and film used back then. I dont imagine anybody would be purchasing the DVD based on
the transfer quality as its purely about the cricket so on that note I will just
say, the video presentation is fine so enjoy the performances and the trip down memories
cricket lane. |
... |
AUDIO
Audio is presented in Dolby 2.0 channel. Its pretty
much dialogue driven with the interviews and the footage of the moments. Dialogue was
clear and easy to understand and there are no use of the surrounds or subwoofer as
expected.

EXTRAS
There are four short featurettes which are basically extra
footage of some of the selected performances. They include:-
- Bonuse Video of the Gilchrist/Langer Partnership (An
extra 8 minutes of cricket highlights of the partnership).
- Bonus Video on Greg Chappell's Last Test Match (An
extra 7 minutes of highlights including a number of slip catches made by Chappell)
- Bonus Video of Tim May's Bowling in the Closest Test
(An extra 2 minutes of footage of Tim May taking 5 wickets and then the last two overs of
play with May & Craig McDermott attempting to get the winning runs in vain)
- The Last 2 Overs of Michael Bevan's One Day
International (The full last two overs of play with Bevan hitting the winning 4
off the last ball)
Overall a great DVD to which I hope to see more of the same
released in the future, if you dont like cricket then you wont like the DVD (why
I am typing this, if you dont like cricket then you wont be reading this
review) but if you do like cricket or know someone who does then you and they will
enjoy every moment of this DVD. In fact I think Ill re-watch it again with my Dad on
Christmas Day to get us warmed up for the Boxing Day Test against South Africa !!! Highly
Recommended. |
