The Replacements |
|
|
|
..... |
|
| . |
... |
The Replacements is really very much in the same vain
as Major League. In an effort to keep the NFL alive during a players strike in 1987, the
Washington Sentinels take a very unorthodox approach to replacing their players.
The new coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) brings together a team of washed up
has-beens and a few other mis-matched entities that really seem to have no chance of being
able to play as a team.
However predictable the story is the players of course come together in the end and
prove everyone wrong. Thrown in of course is the inevitable love story and the Quarterback
(Keanu Reeves) gets the head cheerleader.
There really isnt much else to the story and it does come across as being
particularly lame to begin with but in the end the entertainment value and comedic
combination of characters is enough to hold you attention.
I couldnt help myself though in continually thinking of Major league in that the
story really is quite similar, but in some ways different enough to earn merit in itself.

So how does this transfer hold up?
.... |
VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is bordering on reference
quality but unfortunately doesnt quite make it. The entire transfer is extremely
sharp and clear and the level of detail is very fine indeed. Shadow detail is also
perfect, and at no time did the images lose any detail at all.
The colour palette is sensational. This film gives a lot of
potential for enormous amounts of colour, and it really delivers the goods too. The colour
spectrum is used to its full potential but at no time was it overbearing or in
anyway over saturated.
There were no MPEG artefacts and only one noticeable instance of shimmering. The only
small faults in this transfer were some scattered and relatively small film artefacts,
dust marks etc. |
AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is very good indeed.
Dialogue was always clear and easy to understand. The entire audio track is balanced very
well throughout the sound stage and never really seemed to be very centre heavy.
The surround channels are used frequently to support the
score and add dimension to the directional effects. The LFE channel is also used quite
well, while it didnt really have a huge impact it was constantly felt in supporting
the score and some of the more bass heavy effects.
The score from John Debney was great and really fit the on screen action at all times.
Some of the more common pieces also fit very well with the film. |

- Making of Featurette: A short fifteen minutes of promotional
pieces with only a little behind the scenes footage.
- Making the Plays Featurette: Ten minutes of interviews and
behind the scenes footage. Much more interesting.

really a great feature.
