Starship Troopers

Never has a DVD release caused so much debate on the DVD newsgroups and forums. Why do I hear you ask, well for this movie and now I'm talking about the movie and not the quality of the DVD itself you either love it or you hate it. Opinion has been very divided and a few people disliked it, I for one personally thought it was great.

Starship Troopers is a giant insect vs. man war movie, it sports some of the best CGI special effects I have ever seen. It is the story of a group of graduating high school students who go to war against some very deadly bugs on the planet Klendathu. Yes okay, the cast looked like they just walked off the set of 'Melrose Place' or 'Beverley Hills 90210' but who cares, the director Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall) intended this.

The DVD is provided by Columbia-Tristar and staying true to their previous DVD releases this one is excellent. If you want a DVD that is truly and I mean truly demo quality this is it!. The transfer is the best I have ever seen on a DVD, when the DVD was released so much talk was generated about the superior audio and video quality of this DVD that the subject eventually changed to the actual movie itself and if you take the movie for what it is, a tongue in cheek bug shoot em up with some outstanding special effects then you will enjoy this movie.

The transfer as previously stated is superb, the detail, clarity, contrast, sharpness are all spot on, it produces stunning colours and even the darkest sequences looked great. The special effects are as I said before excellent, the bugs themselves look real, lifelike and very, very lethal. The DVD is presented in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1 - (anamorphically enhanced) only on one side and on the other it contains the features.

The accompanying Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is superb and once more demo quality. It has excellent, constant use of the surround channels, clear dialogue and some ground shaking bass. The battle scenes with the bugs have to be seen and HEARD on this movie and if you want to DVDimpress your friends then this is one DVD you must own. The matrixed dolby surround track is also excellent in it's own right and will please any Prologic owner.

The DVD is also packed full of extra features, it contains deleted scenes, screen tests (including the bug) , scene selections, a documentary, filmmakers commentary, theatrical trailer and behind the scenes footage. Overall a superb DVD release and is heartily recommended for any DVDphile. But be warned the movie is very gory and you will see alot of bugs & people get killed in some horrific ways, mmmm maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much........
