Judgment Night

"Don't Move, Don't Whisper, Don't Even Breath"...........

Judgment Night starring Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jnr and Denis Leary is an excellent film about Frank Wyatt (Estevez), his brother John (Stephen Dorff) and his friends Mike (Gooding Jnr) and Ray (Jeremy Piven) who on their way to a boxing match leave the expressway to avoid a traffic jam and end up getting lost in a violent Chicago neighbourhood. There after witnessing a drug related murder committed by pyschotic drug lord Fallon (Leary) they are pursued by Fallo and his associates through the dark streets in a run for their lives. Soon an innocent evening turns into a cat and mouse chase through the Chicago's asphalt jungle as they rely on each other to survive.

This movie has been a long time favourite of mine and superb performances are put in by all the actors. There are some powerful scenes during the movie and Leary was excellent as the pyschotic Fallon. I was more than pleased to see it enter the DVD library. Brought to you courtesy of Goodtimes Home Video at an excellent price of $14.99 I was a little apprehensive before watching the DVD when it came to the video and audio quality due to the cheap price. But I am glad to say I was more than surprised after viewing.

The video transfer in one word is excellent, 99.9% of the movie takes place during the night-time and along the way encounters some very dark and low lit scenes, including locations such as inside box railway cars, alleyways, underground and the like. The DVD reproduced these incredibly well with an excellent level of black and shadow detail. The image is presented in the letterboxed format only anamorphically at about (1.78:1). The colours are good and fleshtones again natural. Goodtimes did a very good job on this transfer and hopefully future releases will be of this standard.

The audio track is only presented in two channel Dolby Surround, there is no digital track on this disc. That said the Surround version is excellent, the surround speakers are in constant use and accompanied by a very tense gripping musical score I was not disappointed with it at all but was suitably impressed.

Features are all but none. There are no trailers but the DVD comes with french, spanish subtitles. The movie has also been divided into 18 large chapters.

Overall an excellent movie with an excellent video and audio transfer. Highly recommended.
