G.I. Jane

This digitally mastered widescreen edition of 'G.I. Jane' comes to you courtesy of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Demi Moore (Disclosure) stars as Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil a talented Naval Intelligence Officer who is given the opportunity to earn a place in the elite Navy Seals. As the first ever female officer to gain a place in the Seals' training academy she encounters some very stiff resistance from hiearchy and fellow teammates alike. O'Neil is then ultimately sent to a live rescue mission in Libya where her courage, determination and training are put to the test.

Demi Moore is excellent in this role and I think it was one of the best performances of her career, believe me this is no boot camp or Private Benjamin playground and this film directed by Ridley Scott displays with superb results the rigour and toughness of Seal training. I missed this movie when it came out in the theatres but was pleasantly surprised by it when I saw it on video. The story is quite believable and no punches are pulled when she is put through some aggressive training and interrogation techniques.

The transfer is presented in the letterboxed aspect ratio of (2.35:1) only and is clean and generally without digital artifacts. Colour saturation was good and fleshtones natural. There was the odd scene or two where a little film grain reared it's ugly head but overall I thought the video quality to be excellent. Alot of action takes place at night and shadow detail and the level of black is again excellent. Although some people have complained that the image throughout the movie was very dark and appeared to be under contrast. However I think this is due to the input of Ridley Scott as the film is supposed to have a low lit feel to it.

The disc also comes with the Dolby Surround track and the excellent 5.1 channel digital track. The digital track is outstanding and there are plenty of bombs, bullets, explosions going on all around you to satisfy any surround sound freak.. The digital track also earns high praise during a combat jungle scene where you are surrounded by the sounds of crickets, birds and other little creature noises and you can actually feel as if you are there with the Seals. The surround track is also quite good but you do lose the overall sense of realism that the digital track reproduces so well.

Extras are few and far between with only the theatrical trailer presented. Also included are Spanish subtitles, a French language track and the disc is divided into 23 chapters.

Overall a very good DVD, if you enjoyed the movie then you will certainly enjoy the DVD. Recommended.
