The Last Boy Scout

Written by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) and directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun), The Last Boy Scout stars Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans as a seedy private detective (Willis) and a disgraced pro football quarterback (Wayans) teaming together to investigate a murder, political corruption, illegal sports gambling and an attempted US Senator assasination all rolled into one.

I have been eagerly awaiting the DVD release of this movie for a long, long time. What a great film, full of action, sarcasm , one liners, bullets , explosions and high speed chase, now that's my kind of movie! When it finally arrived I could'nt wait to pop it into the DVD player and settle in and enjoy. But to say I was disappointed in the quality of this transfer is a major understatement. It seems that either Warner have dropped off the pace a little bit or the quality of the master for this film was'nt up to scratch because in all honesty the quality of this transfer isn't either.

The image goes from being soft and very grainy at times with scenes with washed out colours to clean, vibrant scenes with good colour saturation. The image kept changing from one end of the quality scale to the other so often that it annoyed me. Some scenes in particular looked straight out of a VHS library. Maybe I've been spoilt lately with excellent transfers from DVD's such as Starship Troopers & The Fifth Element I don't know, but in all fairness the film master transfers for those films are only 1 - 2 years old if that, compared to The Last Boy Scout which is a 1991 release. But I could'nt help than be disappointed. What I also found annoying was that the disc defaults to 'subtitles on' , why they would do that is beyond me and I can only summize it's a production error.

Besides that video transfer the DVD is presented in the aspect ration of both widescreen (2.35:1) and a Pan & Scan version on the opposite side.

The soundtrack also contains a specially remastered edition of Dolby Digital 5.1. This track I also thought was ordinary with little use of the surround channels. However dialogue was well centred and the action sequences are very well reproduced but I must admit that it is alot better than the previous Prologic surround track but not quite up to the same standard of other Digital soundtracks.

The Special Features are quite good with besides the remastered Digital track the disc contains Production Notes, 5 Theatrical Trailers and 29 chapters.

Overall an excellent movie on an ordinary DVD. If you are a fan of this movie like I am though you can live with it. Besides it still is alot better than VHS.
