Well there is a lot to say about this film. At times Meet the Parents is very much a brainless comedy that really requires no thought process from you as a viewer, but then at other times the dry humour from Robert De Niro does require some involvement in the film’s characters. I find that the combination here is pulled off quite well.

Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) has found himself the perfect girl and wants to pop the big question. His first effort goes awry and he decides it’s best to ask permission of Pam’s (Teri Polo) father before he really puts his foot in it.

So the two head off to Pam’s parents house for the weekend for her sisters wedding. The perfect time for Greg to pop the question. Little does he know that Pam’s father Jack (Robert De Niro) is an ex CIA operative specialising in psychological profiling. Greg is making every effort to impress Pam’s parents in the mix of everything he seems to add a little slant to everything which really just makes Jack much more suspicious.

Greg manages to stuff up everything for the entire weekend. Including destroying all the preparations for the wedding in some incredibly funny scenes. He of course ends up on the wrong end of the stick and has to try and redeem himself not only to Pam but the entire family.

There are a lot of hilarious scenes in this film and I really appreciated the dry humour from Robert De Niro and of course the often lameness from Ben Stiller combined very well.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is not quite what I had expected in such a recent vintage transfer. The images are mostly sharp and clear and give some enormous amounts of detail but there are the occasions in which grain does become quite obvious. It seems that this has really been a slap it together kind of transfer and there has been little attention given to the quality of the end result. In saying that there isn’t really that much wrong with it, I just like to see recent films with perfect or near perfect transfers.

As I have mentioned there were instances of gran, mainly in interior shots, which could have been caused by a lack of sufficient lighting in the original film. Shadow detail is great throughout. The colour palette is nicely used and gives a warm feeling to the film most of the time.

There were a couple of small instances of shimmering but again these were in problematic shots and were nothing worse than I would have expected. There are no MPEG artefacts, and no noticeable film artefacts.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track seems to very limited here. While the film is dialogue based and this clear and easy to understand the rest of the audio track leaves much to be desired. The surround channels and LFE channel get some very limited use in supporting effects and the score but really nothing too noticeable at all.

The Score from Randy Newman is also nothing exciting and really sounds like all his others at this point in time. There needs to be some effort to distinguish the film with the score rather than the score being very similar in all his films.

Overall the audio track was very flat and certainly needed some attention given to mixing it better.

This is a very funny film and as a rental the humour makes up for its shortcomings in other areas.
