Unlike Star Wars, there probably wasn’t even a plan going in to make a sequel to Jaws. But of course after Jaws became a mega-mega box office smash hit in ‘75, there wasn’t much chance of it NOT happening.

So 3 years after the Spielberg blockbuster first frightened movie goers out of the water and into the cinemas the Great White Shark was back for a second helping, in the highly originally titled Jaws 2.

4 years of screen time has past since Chief Brody (Roy Schneider) waged battle against the Benchley beast, and for him, it’s been 4 years of paranoia.

When a couple of divers go missing close to to the Amity Island the Chief automatically assumes it’s a shark attack., but of course, no one else does.

After a few more "suspicious" deaths occur in the beaches of Amity, the Chief once again voices his opinion of them probably being a shark attack and before you know it, he’s fired by the major!

To make matters worse for the ‘ol chief, his two kids sneak off, against the Chief’s wishes, with their friends on a yacht trip.

Before you know it the shark is after a boat load of sail boating kids and Brody, is hot on the trail.

With the original Jaws being touted as a masterful film, the makers of Jaws 2 must have been rather intimated this time going in, but at the end of the day Jaws 2 is a very faithful and very decent followup to what did become a declining film series.

Jeannot Szwarc who gave us… Supergirl.. has done a very nice job in delivering the food, err goods for the second time around and with John Williams back on board to score for the sequel, as well as quite a few of the original film’s cast back ON the screen, it’s all good.

So how does this transfer hold up?
....

VIDEO
Jaws 2 comes to us with a "newly remastered" Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer. And it’s actually pretty darn toot'n good.

Colour Saturation is far better than expected, and while it looks a little dated when compared to today’s standards it’s at least constant throughout and really, more than acceptable.

Even though this transfer has been "newly remastered" it still contains a smattering of problems, thankfully none more than a bit of dirt flecking, and those types of filmic nasties.

The Level of Sharpness and detail on a whole is really quite good, with just the odd lapse in detail here and there..nothing too serious

Given the film is some 23 years old, it’s in pretty good nick and is sure to please, I really have little to complain about (some studios are such spoil sports aren’t they! :)

Spread over 2 layers of an RSDL DVD, the layer change occurs at the 83:50 over a rather quite passage.  not too bad at all.

AUDIO
After the very nice 5.1 remix given to the original, it’s a shame Jaws 2 only comes with a Dolby Digital mono audio track (in English and German).

The good news is that this English Mono track, encoded as a Dolby 2.0 mix where the mono signal is split into 2 channels), actually sounds pretty good.

It does lack the dynamics of the original’s sexy new remix, but fidelity on a whole isn’t all that bad (just don’t go in expecting really deep lows and really sweet highs here)
The sound is pretty much always clean and clear, with good sounding dialogue, and the music score comes through nicely (it’s just lacking that smooth bottom end we were treated to with #1)

EXTRAS
Jaws 2 certainly offers far more extras than expected.

The "Bonus Features" menu design certainly threw me off for a second though.
Next to each of the featurettes are 2 icons. Once allows you to play subtitles with the extras, the other turns subtitles off (a rather pointless option if you ask me. (Columbia have the right idea with their little * asterix next to the extras that are subtitled)

Toplining the nice array of extras is

  • Making of … featurette. Running a good 45 minutes, there doesn’t seem to have been too much left out with the offering of a truckloads of interviews, behind the scenes bits and pieces, and a few insites into the firing of the film's first director. (4x3 with 2 channel sound)
  • Keith Gordon Featurette – Huh? I hear many say. Anyone seen the movie version of Christine or Back to School? This fella now mostly writes and directs, and Jaws 2 was his big screen debut.
This is a good little 8 minute interview (4x3 with 2.0 sound)
  • John Williams Featurette. A another very welcome extra on/and with the man who scored some of the most well known films ever made Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Raiders of the Lost Arc, just to name a few.
  • The French Joke : didn’t see this one coming..but I don’t know any French ..quite amusing :)
  • Deleted Scenes – 4 minutes worth. The usual sort of fodder deleted from films. (4x3 letterboxed 2.0 sound)
  • Story Boards : 50 or so storyboard shots from the film. (unlike many story boards, this one is chapter listed, autoplays each storyboard for 5 seconds, AND can be manually chapter skipped…nice to see!)
  • Production Photos. Over 50 of them, presented in the same way as the storyboards (nicely done universal!)
  • Theatrical Trailers : 2 for Jaws 2, 1 for Jaws 3D and 1 for Jaws 4 (all are 4x3 with Dolby 2.0 mono sound)

All in all, Jaws 2 is very nicely presented on DVD, and is certainly the best of the "sequels" and makes a nice companion piece to the Original.
