With the resurgence in horror films of late, it seems all sorts of psychos and serial killers are cutting loose on the big screen. After the raging success of SCREAM, its scriber, Kevin Williamson, took a novella and bought it to life (with some success) in the guise of I Know What you Did Last Summer, starring TV’s girl next door Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Buffy’s Sarah Michelle Gellar.

With IKWYDLS being a mega hit, (and also being left waaaay open for a sequel), someone felt it important to continue the story of Julie James (JLHewitt). Now two years after the supposed death of the fisherman, Julie has moved away to college, and lives an overly paranoid existence. She has left boyfriend Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr) behind in Southport, and this is putting a great strain on their relationship.

When Julie’s flatmate Carla (Singer Brandy) wins a trip to the Bahamas, see asks her boyfriend and Julie along. Julie asks Ray, but being the stupid twat that he is refuses to go, so Carla secretly invites Will (Matthew Settle) a guy who really likes Julie.

When a friend of Ray’s hears what he didn’t do, his friend convinces him to surprise Julie, so the two of them head up to the college.

So the four friends head for the Bahamas at the worst possible time (unbeknownst to them) at the beginning of cyclone season…hmmm something smells fishy to me……

Though the original I Know lacks the freshness and wit of Williamson’s first writing effort, Scream, I Still has even less!!! This is your very standard cliché ridden Hollywood Followup, with a hokey story, bigger budget and tonnes more gore (so it at least has something going for it I suppose)

During the release of the first film, a few comments were made about the emphasise placed on both Jenn and Buffy’s errr…….upper torso region, the alternate Film title, which apparently originated from JLH herself, was I Know What Your Breasts Did Last Summer……In making the sequel, director Danny Cannon made good on that suggestion (Shooting this in Panavision obviously helped matters some also)

So How Does This Transfer Hold Up??
Pretty damn well actually. We are treated to another near perfect anamorphic transfer from the Columbia clan, maintaining it’s theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Colour saturation is quite high throughout, with only a few instances of fleshtones having the overcooked look. Otherwise it’s first rate. Stealing a little from Halloween is the frequent use of orange tint, which holds up nicely, as does the very cool blue during the severe thunderstorm on the island. It was great to see no sign at all of grain, as well as a minimal amount of aliasing. The only real letdown (that appeared during one sequence was with Will’s horizontally striped shirt at the beginning of the film. Nasty!!! ..but it’s over in under a minute) ……With such a clean and vivid picture, the level of sharpness is quite high, and the image generally has great depth.

For a little while now I’ve been listening to parts of the alternate language tracks on DVDs. A few movies back I noticed that the German Audio Track on Mask of Zorro sounded better, less compression. I’ve found the exact same thing here with I Still Know’s Dolby Digital 5.1 German Track (incorrectly credited as a French track on the DVD slick). While the Dolby Digital 5.1 English track sounds great, the German leaves it for dead, with a much wider front soundstage, deeper & tighter bass, and a little more aggression to the surrounds.

While I found a slight volume increase on the English track helped, The German track still had more ooomph, which beckons the question…WHY????????

I have heard that different countries have a taste for different sound tracks, some like more treble, some less, some prefer a sweeter sounds, etc. I can only assume this is why there is a difference in these two audio tracks (now I wish I had continued on with German at high school!!! )

In any case, your audio system will get a very nice workout from either track.

Audio Highlights
Ch 01 00:48 - 01:08 Opening Credits (German 5.1 version waaay cooler)
Ch 05 10:57 - 11:08 How Does it Feel??
Ch 15 50:23 - 50:33 Here comes the rain again
Ch 16 57:46 - 57:58 Tennis Anyone?? (Wider & more open Front soundstage on German 5.1 version)
Ch 19 66:00 - 66:10 Ghostly Screams
Ch 21 75:00 - 75:23 Hooked on the Chase

I was a little surprised with the lack of a running commentary on I Still Know seeing as one was made for the original film, seems only natural to continue this trend, pity, other than that, there’s the usual Columbia fare, 2 trailers (1 a great teaser), cast and crew bios, a Featurette, as well as JLHewitt’s music Video for "How Do I Deal"

I Still Know really doesn’t do much for the horror genre, but has its moments of Gore and JLH breast shots(did i mention this was shot in panavision:-)……. With a terrific picture and great sound it’s a little easier to overlook the lame story, just make sure you’ve well and truly switched your brain off before sitting down to watch this J
