I’m so glad I had never watched any trailers for this film before I saw it. I sat down with a friend one night to watch it and she had seen the trailers and basically knew the whole story and I can tell you it ruined the film.

I found without knowing all about it, I was enthralled for the whole 3 hours. My friend though knew what to expect and knew what was going to happen, all from watching the trailer.

Anyway I’ll give you a quick and not too revealing run down on the story

Based on a fantastic novel from Stephen King. Tom Hanks plays Paul Edgecomb, a guard leader on death row or what is otherwise known as the Green Mile, at Cold Mountain.

Paul is amazingly calm and humane to all the prisoners on the Green Mile.

The Mile changes dramatically when the governor’s nephew is placed there as a guard. He is less than pleasant to anyone. Along with his disruption comes a prisoner John Coffey a HUGE! black man who has racially been convicted of murdering 2 little girls.

John however possesses some amazing powers which help many during the film.

It’s hard to tell you much more without spoiling the experience of the film.

I have to say I have never cried so much in a film before. Yes I know it’s a female thing it happens, but this is certainly the most moving film I have ever seen.

So how does the transfer hold up ??

VIDEO
This 1.78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen transfer is superb quality. I had to watch it several times to focus on the transfer as I was so caught up in the film I lost track of looking for any faults.

The entire film is exceptionally sharp and clear. Shadow detail was perfect even with deep and dark blacks. There was some very minor ailiasing but was almost unnoticeable. There are no MPEG artefacts and film arefacts were seen only a couple of times and were very small anyway.

The only real drawback were some instances of grain mainly in the opening sequences and only very minor in the rest of the film. I wouldn’t deduct too much for this though as the transfer was excellent in all other aspects.

The layer change at 95.18 was well placed and didn’t really interrupt the film.

AUDIO
The Dolby digital 5.1 audio track was also very good. Dialogue was occasionally a little muffled but not to any great extent.

The soudstage is used well and surrounds and base were given a good workout during the film. The base channel was not overly active but did get a bit of use to enhance some action scenes and to support effects.

The musical score from Thomas Newman was great. He has really found a feel for the emotion in the film and portrayed it well throughout. This certainly enhanced the film and put you in the scenes.

EXTRAS
Theatrical Trailer: A great trailer but it gives away a little too much of the film. Don’t watch it first.

Featurette: Walking the Green Mile. This is very much an extension of the trailer with a little behind the scenes footage and some interviews with cast and crew.

OVERALL
I wouldn’t miss this film. The transfer quality is great and the film is amazing.
