I would have to be one of the most non science fiction people you could pick to review this film. Given that it has been described as a fantastic parody of several science fiction TV series and films, I generally would miss half the jokes but I have to say even given my ignorance this is still an hilarious film.

Tim Allen plays Jason Nesmith who is the token leader of a group of almost has-been actors who starred in a TV series called Galaxy Quest; which has been finished for several years, but has developed such a following of fans that the team now make a living out of appearances, interviews and autograph signing’s.

However far off in another galaxy are a race of friendly aliens (Thermians) who have come across the footage of these shows and believe they are historical fact. They have based their entire lives on the Galaxy Quest and have even built a replica space ship. When the evil Sarris comes along the Thermians turn to their leaders for help

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is another reference quality offer from Universal. The entire transfer is sharp and clear throughout, in fact at times I was amazed at just how much detail can be seen in some of these shots. Shadow detail is perfect throughout with no loss of detail at all. There are some very slight film artefacts and that is the only thing I can possibly find wrong here. The colour spectrum is rendered perfectly with great natural skin tones and nice rich and vibrant colours.

Basically the transfer is great!

AUDIO
Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. While the dialogue was clear throughout the surrounds seemed to be a little on the bland side. There is also a great problem with the volume level. I had to turn this film up around 6-7 db higher than normal. Which is a shock to the system when you flick back to the tele.

The surround channels were used quite frequently but had no real impact, it’s almost as if they were also recorded too low as I tried turning up the surrounds and there was a considerable improvement in the overall feel of the audio. The same can also be said for the LFE channel, which didn’t have a lot of impact on the film either.

Overall this isn’t a bad audio track it just needs some adjusting in places.
