Many movies udergo a title change before, during, and after
production. Some do it to keep the film a secret that it is even being made (Scream
3s working title was Ghostface..hmm that's highly original isn't it :)
During the development of Final Destination, it was known as Flight 180. Unlike Scream
this wasnt designed to hide the "real" movie being made, Flight 180 was
simply the original title of the movie.
Like Scream, which was intitally set to be called Scary Movie, Final Destination is
also riddled throughout the film with references toits original movie title.
Having what can only be described as a psychic moment, Alex, Devon Sawa (from the very
cool Idle Hands) gets on a plane, with a
bunch of his school mates, bound for Paris, and just prior to take off dreams the plane
catches fire and explodes in mid air. Upon waking, a series of events lead Alex to believe
that it wasnt just a dream. He gets into a fight with the school bully Carter (Kerr
Smith, jack from Dawsons Creek), and the two, along with a few bystanders, get
kicked off the plane. Clear (Ali Larter from 2000s version of House of Haunted Hill)
though not kicked off the plane, decides to get off just the same.
With Alex and Carter still fighting (mostly with words) in the airport terminal, Flight
180 does in fact blow up in mid air, killing all its passengers. This leaves, Alex,
Carter, Clear, Carters Girlfriend Kerry, (Amanda Deter), the school geek Billy (Sean
William Scott) , Alexs best friend Tod (Chad E. Donella) and the school teacher Ms
Lewton(the scriptwriter s real life wife) as the only survivors. Problem is they
were all suppose to die. It was part of Deaths Plan.
Before you can say, This is a horror films and theres sure to plenty of
gruesomely fun deaths, thats precisely what be happening here J
So its all up to Alex to figure out how to cheat death before they all get it.
TRIVIA NOTE. Several of the films characters last names are those of some
of Horror Films greatest, Hitchcock, Chaney to name a couple
So How Does This Transfer
Hold Up?
VIDEO
Final Destination comes from The Roadshow Clan with a very nice Anamorphic Widescreen
Transfer. My only real complaint is a less than perfect focus now and then, leaving
the image with a slight haze in spots. Though Im relieved this problem is not
constant, and leaves for a very nice picccy overall with a good level of black, natural
colour saturation, and a general high level of detail, (which shows no signs of edge
enhancement..has a very natural look about it actually)
Though F.D is you good 90 minute movie, the DVD is chock fiull of some goodies, so the
movie is spread over 2 layers of an RSDL DVD. The Rather well placed layer change occurs
during chapter 16 at 75:06 on the shot of the two FBI agents in their car on a stakeout.
AUDIO
While the Dolby Digital 5.1 encoded audio track simply kicks some
serious arse, it is let down by the odd bit of un-intellagable dialogue that makes
you reach for the remote to hear what the heck is being said.
Though not always a problem, its none the less a disappointment when you take
into consideration the sound FXs, music score and overall mix are excellent. Theres
some seriously Low LFE on hand here, and a highly active surround presence. (god bless
English Subtitles for the hearing impaired is all I can say)
Also included is a Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track, which in its own right is very good,
but cant compare to the incredibily active and aggressive 5.1 mix.
EXTRAS
I was somewhat disappointed to find that our region 4 version is missing an isolated music
score, with Composer Shirley Wallkers commentary, but weve still been treated
to a fare amount of extra bits and pieces.
As groovy as the animated menus are with backgrounds that change when returning to the
previous menu, and the filmic moments between said menus, I simply hated the way things
were selected. There are "++" and ">>" everywhere
and text selections that are simply way to close together to make this a menu that is easy
to navigate around. Sure it looks cool, but at the end of the day simplicity of use is
what a DVD menu should cater for. ..Okay my bitch is over, onto the good parts of the DVD
extras
Commentary track with write Glenn morgan and Director James Wong. Other than
being recorded WAY to loud, its a pretty good comm track as the boys tell a few
tales and whatnot. (I bet they stole the idea for using a midget for a background person
from Casablanca!! J
Deleted Scenes.. 3 scenes, cut from the film, one is the Films original
ending (glad they dumped it
this film is suppose be all good gruesome fun after all)
16x9 with 2.0 sound
Theatrical Trailer. Aaaah, dont you just love it when you get a trailer on
a DVD with 5.1 sound mix. 16x9 piccy to boot
Interviews with the Executives. This is an excellent featurette on the test
screening of the movie and how the film was changed/altered to give what was thought to be
a better moofy experience
they were right! 16x9 with 2.0 sound
Premonitions. a 20 minute featurette, [with some oomba-joomba value] about a
lady who is psyhic and works with the police to help solve crimes 16x9 with 2.0 sound
Cast and Crew Bios. Plenty of info on the cast and crew, but what a pain to
navigate. It would be nice if the selection for each persons filmography was
obvious., in addition to the fact there are 2 separate pages of cast and crew bios (you
need to click on the ">>" to go page 2 with the cast and crew bios
Games. Now obviously my psychic ability is total crap as I didnt guess one
of those damn cards right in "your psychic Eye" then again maybe the fact
Im going to Die in a few years left me feeling a bit low after playing "Death
Clock"
All in all I LOVED Final Destination. Theres a great sequence that every person
who has watched this film [in my presence] has crapped themselves during. [I crack up
every time I see it, with and without an audience].. folks who have seen F.D. will know
which sequence Im referring to.
For some good [harmless] gruesome fun, you definitely want to check this baby out. Oh
and the DVD is pretty sweet also.
