There are a heck of a lot of TV shows which wouldn't
stand a chance at being brought to life on the big screen. But of course there are a
few exceptions to the rule, and their transition has been incredibly smooth and very well
received, (like the Fugitive and of course undoubtedly the most successful of transitions
with Star Trek)
In the 70's Charlie's Angels were a household name as everyone knew who you meant when you
uttered the name Sabrina, Jill or Kelly.
Well over 20 years has passed since these small screen goddesses transformed into the
avenging angels and so now a new generation of Charlie's crime fighting girls are ready to
kick some butt, and this time on the Silver Screen.
So now it's Natalie (Cameron), Dylan (Drew) and Alex(Lucy) working for Charlie (again
voiced only by John Forsythe) with their Beloved Bosley (a perfectly cast Bill Murray) as
their mentor (of sorts).
As was the case with the TV show, it's not the plot which is important, and this time
around Computer whiz kid Eric Knox (Sam Rockwell) has been kidnapped, allegedly by
Billionaire Telecommunications giant Roger Corwin (Tim Currry having a blast).
Eric's Business Partner Vivian Woods (Kelly Lynch) hires the The Townsend Detective Agency
to stake out Corwin and find Eric before something diabolical happens.
And so sets the story for many impressive set pieces with the Angels kung-fu fighting
their way through many (incidentally the girls did a very large percentage of their own
stunt/wire for the film and this makes it all the better)
With tongue planted firmly in cheek Charlie's Angels is pop corn entertainment at it's
finest.
So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
As visually stunning as this Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer can be, there
is just a fraction oversharp and so edges are a little too defined. Thankfully,
this has in no way resulted in excessive aliasing, in fact there is no aliasing!!
The Director also chose to deliberately use a high level of colour saturation which has
resulted in an amazingly vibrant and rich looking picture. it does at times go a little
bit too high, most notably with Fleshtones, but overall it's pure eye candy, and the
picture looks pretty good also :))
While the above mentioned problems didn't bother me too much, I did find the increased
level of grain and dirt flecking in the split screen effects a disappointment. There
is a noticeable decrease in picture quality only during these sequences. They do add
great effect to the scenes, and they'd be sadly missed if conventional cutting was used
with the interaction of the characters, but I really expected to see better, especially
from a Columbian Based movie.
Spread over 2 layers of an RSDL DVD. The Layer change occurs at the 77:33 minute
mark from chapter 25 to 26. (Dylan's Grand Exit to the closeup of Alex).
Though it is placed after a genuine scene change, it's a tad disruptive, but I'm just nit
picking :)

AUDIO
Now this audio mix truly rocks!! This is a fine example 99.99% of the time as to
what a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix should be. Except for one brief moment
in Chapter 14 during Lucy Lui's Standout moment where there is some dialogue distortion.
Other than that, Dialogue is clean and clear throughout (most of the
talking was apparently from the Live Recordings and was not dubbed later) and this does
add greatly to the natural sound quality.
The Charlie's Angels Music theme has been livened up some, and the rest of the music is
bits and pieces from the past 20 or so years classic hits, that everyone should know.
(They've gathered so terrific songs here, and they work beautifully with the
onscreen action)
Effects wise, this is exceptional, with pin point accuracy in not only the fronts, but
also the surrounds. In fact if your amp can be set to Dolby Surround EX mode or the like,
this soundtrack is even better!! (BUT please note Charlie's Angels does NOT carry an
official Dolby EX mix, it is just mixed so well, you'd swear it was one :)

EXTRAS
Other than 1 MAJOR Cheat there is a fantastic array of extras included on this
Collector's Edition DVD.
The Audio Commentary featuring director McG and Director Of Photography
Russell Carpenter is fascinating to listen to.
I was quite surprised to hear the DOP talk so much (or at least get a word in) with the
fast talking McG by his side.
The two obviously work very well together and the comm track reflects this.
Then there are the umpteen minutes only featurettes (a continuous play option would
have been nice here!)
- Welcome to Angel World - Interviews with the production crew intercut
with film and behind the scenes footage on the creating of the world of the angels.
runs just shy of 5 minutes and is 4x3 with 2 channel sound.
- Getting G'd Up - The cast and crew talk lovingly of the
infectious McG. Runs about 6 minutes 4x3 DD2.0
- The Master and the Angels - Cheung Yan Yeun is world renowned for
lending his martial arts expertise in Films. This goes behind the scenes showing the
Angels many months of training in order to get in shape for the incredibly demanding
physical stunts they performed themselves. Runs about 6 minutes and is 4x3 with
DD2.0
- Angelic Attire : Dressing The Angels - speaks for itself
really. runs about 3 minutes 4x34 DD2.0
- Angelic Effects - 7 minute featurette on creating the film's ga-zillion
special effects. 4x3 with DD2.0
- Wired Angels - very brief featurette on the wire work used in the film.
2 mins. 4x3 DD2.0
- Deleted and Extended Scenes - 3 segments in total, titled Marco Polo,
THe Mens Room, and Extras Shake and Bake all are 4x3 letterboxed with production only
sound.
- Outtakes and Bloopers - You know how I mentioned 1 feature was a total
Cheat? well this is it. If you've seen the end credits of the film, you've
seen these outtakes and bloopers. :( but it is Anamorphic Widescreen with Dolby 5.1
sound :)
- Theatrical Trailers (nice selection, but where's Crouching Tiger?? )
1) Charlie's Angels Theatrical Trailer. 1.85
Letterboxed with DD5.1
2) Charlie's Angels Teaser Trailer Anamorphic Widescreen with
DD5.1 (this clip TOTALLY sold me on the movie :)
3) My Best Friend's Wedding Anamorphic Widescreen DD2.0
4) Vertical Limit Anamorphic Widescreen DD5.1
5) Almost Famous 4x3 Letterboxed DD2.0
.. |
* Cast and Crew Filmographies
* Music Videos -
1) Independent Woman Part 1 (Destiny's Child) 4x3
letterbox DD2.0
2) Charlie's Angels 2000 (Apollo Four Forty) 4x3 letterbox
DD2.0
* Easter Eggs (3) - without giving them away, you'll find 1
Easter egg on each of the Extra Features pages
* Dolby Digital City Trailer Animated Menus with DD2.0 sound (the audio
portion has a whopping -12db Dolby sound level offset)
* The NEW Columbia Video Trailer. ...interesting to say
the least
All the stops were pulled out for the making of this and the
end result speaks for itself. This is the sort of film that simply wants to have fun
and does and as a DVD it's winner all round.. highly recommended
