And Absolutely Fabulous is the best way to describe it too. As anyone who reads my reviews would know. I have a love of British comedy and Ab Fab is certainly way up there with the best of them. I have been watching this series on TV for many years and I could safely say that I’ve seen every show at least once, and I’d watch them all many more times too especially now that they’re presented in a far superior format.

This is the last of the Ab Fab episodes and really gives a great impression of what every other episode is like. For anyone who has never seen the show it is basically about two aging friends, Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders), No-one knows their real age but I’m guessing 40 something. Edina is a fashion magazine editor and lives a high rolling life of fashion and socialising, that anyone would be happy with. However Eddie is not your ordinary executive and certainly has no fashion sense whatsoever. Patsy is her tag along friend who never eats. Yes I can safely say I’ve never seen Patsy eat, instead she permanently has a bottle of wine in her right hand which is her life line. They both indulge in social drugs and toy boys on a regular basis.

However it’s time for things to get serious as Edina’s daughter Saffron (Julia Sawalha of Pride and Prejudice) is about to married. Saffron is quite the opposite of her mother and Patsy. She’s quiet educated and basically a bit of a geek, which Eddie has never been able to come to terms with. The wedding is to be a big white church wedding as Saffy’s fiancé Paolo is also high up in the social ranks of society.

Patsy and Edina however are sure to add their touches though.

There is so much else going on throughout these 2 episodes that I really don’t where to begin other than to say don’t miss and you’ll find out why it is such a great series! If you’ve seen anything of French and Saunders believe me you’ll love this!

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
I was expecting to once again be reporting on a poor transfer for a great show. But the 1.33:1 full frame transfer is not too bad at all. I would be happy to say that any real transfer problems came from the source material rather than a transfer fault. The source material seems to be video rather than film. Which can be detected in the quality of the close shots, which drops off considerably when there is anything of a distance in the subject. Classic example being the out door shots which really look like they’ve been taken with a handy holiday cam rather than a decent film recording.

None the less the transfer is still pretty good. Shadow detail is quite good but since the majority of the footage is indoors with bright studio type lighting this is to be expected.

There are some grain problems especially with the more distant scenes where the two are driving in a car outdoors and the background is completely out of focus and grainy.

There are occasions of shimmering and some MPEG artefacts in some panning shots but overall for a transfer intended for television this isn’t too bad.

...

AUDIO
The Dolby 2.0 audio Transfer is somewhat bland but it can’t be expected that there would be anything really exciting here. The series is basically dialogue driven and this clear and easy to understand throughout, unless it is intended to be mumbling dribble. Which in itself is not uncommon with these characters.

The surround channels were not used at all and really there isn’t a lot of opportunity for it. Aside from which it would give it a different feel, the front-based sound is really indicative of a cheap British comedy, and has it’s advantages.

The LFE channel was present on some small occasions to support the soundtrack, but don’t expect to rattle the kitchen cupboards at all.

...

EXTRAS
Outtakes: a series of hilarious outtakes and stuff ups from the making of the series, which are even funnier than the show itself.
