Okay, Okay, so any pedantic
home theatre nut will instantly recognise the mistake in the naming of this page (along
with the missing subby indicator normally located dead centre :)
A Dolby EX sound mix is NOT encoded as true 6.1 audio, only DTS ES Discrete 6.1 is.
But at the end of the day your Dolby EX and DTS ES capable Amp is going to DECODE the
signal out to at least 6.1 separate channels of sound, hence the name..so there! :)
For over 2 years now selected movies have been
released to Theatres with a DOLBY EX sound mix. The end result is an additional channel
for the surrounds, the Surround Back channel, which is matrixed into the Surround Left and
Right Channels and extracted with the appropriate hardware. (when these "EX"
audio mixes are encoded into DTS, they still retain the "extra channel" and so
can also be decoded with a DTS-ES decoder which extracts the Surround back channel)
Unofficially and Officially these movies have been released to DVD with not only this
Dolby Surround EX sound mix in tact, but in some cases the soundtrack is taken BACK a step
in the mixing process and released in true 6.1 and encoded as a DTS ES Discrete 6.1 Sound
Mix.
DTS also have their version of 6.1 matrix sound, called DTS ES Matrix.
extracts from this Dolby Article include :
......the extra channel in a Surround EX
soundtrack will come along for the ride when movie soundtracks encoded with Dolby Digital
Surround EX are transferred to DVD-Video discs.
...........Every film released in Dolby Surround EX theatrically will remain so encoded
when it is transferred to DVD.
Listed below are these movies with their REGION
4 DVD Sound Mix Status.
(According to Dolby most had a Dolby EX soundtrack for theatrical release, and
According to DTS, it would appear some have been encoded only as DTS-ES??? ..
there's a few things about this that STILL don't quite make sense...we hope to find out
soon)
For Theatrical EX/ES listings
below - some movies are ONLY mentioned on the DTS website (and NOT under the Dolby EX
page). In these instances "YES-ES" is used to indicate that the DTS
theatrical sound mix can play back as "6.1" using a DTS-ES add-on decoder.
(In theory, this should also mean the DVD will be EX/ES compatible)
