Laura Walker: ‘What's the big deal?’
Steve Walker: ‘The big deal is that the guy gives me the creeps, and the girl is my daughter.’

Fear is a fast-paced thriller about a possessive lover who stalks his on-again off-again teenage girlfriend. Mark Wahlberg (Perfect Storm) plays David McCall, the psychopathic boyfriend of Nicole Walker (Reese Witherspoon - Pleasantville).

Nicole meets David at a rave party and starts a relationship with him. Things seem to be perfect for Nicole as David integrates himself into her family and friends. But his darker side rears its ugly head when he reacts violently to Nicole's platonic friendship with Gary and viciously beats him up in front of her.

Nicole then tries to distance herself from him as much as possible. While Nicole tries this, David manages to win her over again.

Nicole's father, Steve (William Petersen), sensing all along that David was not who he appeared warns David off and trashes his apartment after David trashes his car. This results in a showdown at the Walker home when David and his mates rock up for revenge and for David to claim what he thinks is his.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The video is presented in it’s original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and is Anamorphic Widescreen. The video transfer is on the most part excellent. The image is clear and highly detailed. Fleshtones are natural and there are no artifacts or grain to speak of. Colour saturation was spot on and the only minor flaw is a little bid of edge enhancement here and there although it was not distracting.

AUDIO
Presented in Dolby Digital English 5.1 this is a good sound track. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand, the majority of the film is anchored to the front three channels. However there is some excellent low end bass particularly in the rave party scene and even more so towards the end of the film during the attack on the Walker home. You can really feel the bass as they try to smash down the barricaded doors. Surround channels are used sparingly but add good ambience throughout the film.
(ed.  NOTE the back cover of the DVD slicks this as only available in Dolby Digital 2.0.
