Ok I’ll admit it…. I think I have seen this film about a dozen times now and can almost recite it word for word. There are a lot of very witty lines in this film and I laugh every time I see it.

Brad Pitt plays Jerry Welbach a fabulously bungling crook who is on his last leg with the gangsters he is working for. Jerry’s last job is to travel to Mexico and collect a gun "from a kid’ and bring it back.

Too easy! For anyone other than Jerry. Jerry’s major problem seems to be his girlfriend Samantha (Julia Roberts) who has given him the ultimatum that if he goes to Mexico on this job that she won’t be there when he gets back. You see Jerry promised Samantha they would go to Vegas together so she can be a croupier. Since Jerry’s life depends on it he has no other choice than to go to Mexico, and Samantha heads off to Vegas.

So; Samantha is now kidnapped and taken hostage by a man named Leroy, well she thinks his name is Leroy. Leroy (James Gandolfini) just happens to be gay, and Samantha takes great joy in deciphering his psyche and setting him up with a little male friend they meet along the way.

Meanwhile back in Mexico, Jerry has picked himself up "El Camino" (a nice car) and has ventured off to collect the said gun. Once he finds the Kid and collects the gun we are introduced to the story of how the gun was crafted and it’s legendary history. You will see this story several times during the film and each time it is different and entertaining.

I could go on about the plot forever but I don’t want to spoil it. This reminds me very much of Lock Stock with all the twists and turns in the film that all piece together in the end, and in a similar vein Brad Pitt’s character also matures and comes together in the end as not such a bungling crim.

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is superb and borders on reference quality. I expected this to be very good given its recent vintage and I was certainly not disappointed at all. The transfer is generally sharp and clear throughout but sometimes comes across as a little soft this is a very picky comment but really this could have been a little better. Generally though the transfer is mostly perfect. There are no visible instances of edge enhancement, ailiasing or MPEG artefacting and there were no film artefacts to be seen.

The colour palette was also very good and showed a good use of colour to create mood and environment for the film. The colours and predominantly warm in different shade of brown, yellow, orange and greys which are offset occasionally when the scenes change back to Las Vegas. It is these scenes, which fell a little short and could have had a greater exaggeration in colour saturation and brightness.

AUDIO
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is reference quality and I could find no fault here at all. I was impressed with the surround channel use, which gave a good lift to the soundtrack, and effects, which come in to play quite often. Similarly the LFE channel is not used often but certainly plays it’s part well and at times can be felt as well as heard.

The soundtrack from Alan Silvestri, who happens to be a favourite composer of mine and also composed the Forrest Gump suite, has done a marvellous job. The theme music for the film is very catchy yet doesn’t become annoyingly over-used.
