One thing i’ve always loved about movies, (and I say with great sarcasm) is how 10 years can pass from 1 film to its sequel, and yet it may only be 1 or 2 years after the fact.

They did it with Friday the 13th (don’t even get me started on the F13 timelines), they did it with Elm Street, and they did it with Child’s Play.

Made only 1 year after #2, Child’s Play 3 takes place eight years after Chucky’s second attack on Andy Barkley (played here by Dungeon’s & Dragon’s Justin Whalin).

Having been kicked out of foster home after foster home, Andy now finds his all of 16 years at military school.

Upon his arrival he’s of course picked on for being a little bit of a wallflower, (but no one is aware of his traumatic childhood).

AGAIN, Play Pals decides to re-manufacture the Good Guy Doll (even after the "supposedly unexplained" umpteen deaths of Play Pal employee), and Chucky is AGAIN resurrected.

While in 1 and 2 Andy was the spiritually/mystically selected receiver of the soul of Charles Lee Ray aka Chucky, he ain’t the one this time around seeing as chucky has a new body and with this being so, the first person to see him is the one who body the soul of chucky can take.

Tyler (Jeremy Sylvesrs) is the boy of choice here. His father is rather high up in the Military food chain, so Little Tyler is attending Military School for safe keeping..

Setting outing Number 3 in a Military school was quite a good idea for a series that was starting to sag, as there’s plenty of fun to be had with all the "real" toys at Chucky’s disposal.

Still it ain’t as good as the original, but is a step up from #2 (plus it’s got Andrew Robinson (Garek from Star Trek DS9) as the sadistic barber! :)

So how does this transfer hold up?

VIDEO
This Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer is only a fraction of a step up in quality and production Values from #2.

Ironically it’s a longer film AND it’s only on a DVD5. (CP2 was shorter and on a DVD9..though it did have 2 Dolby 2.0 audio tracks, whereas this only has one).

Colour Saturation is natural looking from start to finish, though sharpness is definitely on the safe side, and could do with just a little push to make it reveal a little more detail.
Black level is okay with a decent amount of image depth and shadow detail.

AUDIO
Presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, this works very well in Dolby Surround mode, and sounds even better utilising DTS NEO :6. With my amp equipped for ALL of DTS’s currently available playback modes, I decided to put it to the test with CP3, seeing as there’s quite a lot of intentional ambience on offer.

This did require me to output the Dolby Digital bitstream as a PCM conversion (my denon amp locks onto it being in dolby otherwise :).

The end result is quite impressive, though not a patch on true discrete sound but never the less does widen the soundstage out across the front and gives the centre channel more of that "discrete front soundstage feel". Surrounds are also ...stereo sounding, due to the way DTS:NEO extrapolates the sound for surround usage.

It’s actually a feature I’m going to play with more on 2 channel sounds tracks on DVD (I’ve actually always used it for Foxtel and TV, as I figured...why not :)

Even why not in DTS:NEO mode the sound mix is really very good for 2 channel sound with good clean dialogue, nicely detailed music and sound effects, and a nice surround sound presence. (The finale in the amusement park offers lots of little surround FX and musical ambience)

EXTRAS
yeah, not much here, just a trailer for #2

As a film it’s a step up from #2 and quite a bit of fun now and then (with a nice touch of meanness throw in) Still, it’s really only for the fans type material..so I likes it :).
