What’s that Hollywood saying... one boxoffice hit deserves a re-hash? Yes, well after Chucky became a screaming, killing, walking, talking living Doll in Child’s Play, sequel-itis struck bigtime and Child’s play 2 was rushed into production.

After nearly being killed by the killer doll Chucky (wonderfully voiced here again by horror veteran Brad Doriff),  little Alex Vincent returns as Andy Barkley, the poor kid who’s mum bought him a possessed Doll for his birthday.
And Without a care in the world, the Play Pal toy company being a new production line of Good Guy dolls. Of course, the original killer doll is re-constructed, cleaned up and prettied up in a new box, and given to the CEO of Play Pal, who is subsequently killed in his apartment, by, (oh like you didn’t see this coming :) Chucky!!!!!

After a quick squiz at the CEOs computer, Chucky "discovers" that Andy is in Foster care and soon the chase is on.

You’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of killings on offer, though none quite as creative as in the first film :( But it’s passable Chucky entertainment (the series really didn’t pick up wind until Ronny Yu took over the batten for Bride Of Chuck....come on Roadshow, get this baby out on DVD!!!! :)

So how does this transfer hold up?
....

VIDEO
Interestingly, The Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer for CP2 opens with an aspect ratio of around 1.6:1, then after several minutes in goes to 1.85:1. There is no clear reason or logical explanation for this, but you know, it makes about as much sense as the film itself :)

On Offer is a decent transfer. It does look a bit battered with dirt flecking, and a light level of noise (grain, grime, etc) but colour saturation and sharpness aren’t too bad at all. in fact the colour saturation overall is very good with nice natural fleshtones and a generally pleasant looking colour scheme. Sharpness for the most part is of a very acceptable standard, but does on occasions drop back a little and this results in a the odd occurrence of slight haziness.

Black level also quite good, with a relatively decent amount of shadow detail for your spooky dark shots :)

Most interesting is the fact this 80 odd minute film is spread over 2 layers of an RSDL DVD. (as was the 80 odd minute JAws 4). Upon sampling the bitrate of the video, it seems the bit rate runs quite high in most instances (you’re looking at 8.5mbps and up for many sequences)
The well placed layer change occurs at 46:28

AUDIO
Presented in Dolby Digital 2.0, this works so-so in Dolby Surround mode, but is mainly a front sound stage mix. Dialogue is clean and clear resulting in a high level of intelligibility throughout.
There is a very light smattering of musical ambience to the surrounds, but very little in terms of FX sounds.

Graeme Revell (who also scored part 4) tries a rather "grand" sound for a horror film. (it might have worked better if the ante' was upped in the Surround sound stakes :)

EXTRAS
yeah, not much here, just a trailer for #2

The original Child’s Play was a great little film with quite a mean streak, but #2 is what you’d call your typical cheap Hollywood sequel, with just the odd good "Chucky" moment. Strictly for the fans only.
