Fox Moves Into DVD Through Direct Distribution
03:42 p.m Apr 08, 1999 Eastern

LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--April 8, 1999--Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) International Thursday announced that it will enter into the DVD market beginning in September with the release of "Titanic," followed by a slate of Fox's top film titles.

Fox's DVD products will be distributed directly into the international marketplace by the company's subsidiary offices in Australia, Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom.

"We have been closely watching the development of DVD internationally," commented Stephen Moore, president, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment International. "Its initial success and continued growth are evidence of the strategic importance of digital video in the marketplace.

"I am confident the time is right to establish our DVD presence and believe in the proven success and strength of our own Fox distribution channels to lead us in achieving this objective."

TCFHE International's September launch will be led by James Cameron's "Titanic." "We expect the release of 'Titanic' will pave the way for DVD internationally, in the same way it broke new ground for the sell-through video business, where it established itself as the No. 1 video of all time," stated Moore.

The "Titanic" release will be followed with a November slate of selected titles including "The Siege," "Die Hard 1 & 2" and "Speed 1 & 2." Also scheduled for later release are "The X-Files Movie," "Romeo and Juliet," "Ever After: A Cinderella Story," "Independence Day," "Braveheart" and the "Alien" series.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment International is a division of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, a News Corporation Company. Recognized as an innovative industry leader, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is the worldwide marketing, sales and distribution company for all of Fox Video and Fox Interactive products.

Columbia Ups the Ante
Starting with their June Releases, Columbia Tristar are to increase the number of DVDs released for each month. In June there will be 6 DVD titles released, and for July there will be 8 (they must know my birthday's in July..aren't they nice :-).......The number released each month is said to fluctuate, so I'd say CTS are going using these upcoming months as a test to see how well that many titles for each month will do in sales numbers.

This increase in Titles does NOT include the upcoming Universal titles that CTS are going to be distributing, which we will most likely start seeing in June 1999.
(Out of Sight was mentioned to me the other day, but no set date unfortunately)

17th March 1999

For the past few weeks Roadshow has gone through a few changes with a new DVD Marketing Manager, and the addition of a new Technical Support Person for DVD.   (notice how this coincides with the announcement that Roadshow are to drop MPEG Audio??)....thanks goto the Tech Support DVD fellow/Guru :-)  for that one.....(who also happens to be something of a movie buff and is giving Roadshow DVDs a little overhaul to spruce things up)....

Firstly there is the dropping of MPEG Audio, (yippy!!!)..this will take effect after the 4th April release of Don Quixote.....Future titles will have Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround Audio tracks only...(I just prey that Dolby Surround isn't the default audio track like on Columbia DVDs......(please default to DD5.1 guys)

Cover designs are to also change with a new and improved features box on the back cover along with a new  WIDESCREEN logo that fronted on most of Roadshow's latest DVDs.....plus a few other "cosmetic' changes

Something else mentioned to me,  regarded the content/extras on Roadshow DVDs.   Roadshow can not get legal copyright use with some material being licensed for domestic American/British use....real bummer this as several of the DVDs that Roadshow have released come with fantastic extras like running commentaries on the USA Region 1 counterparts.....and seeing as some of these features are of great interest to a lot of people, they will continue to source their DVDs from the USA instead.....I know I'm guilty of this, but I simply can't pass up on a good running commentary (one of my favourite DVD/LD features)....Hopefully as the market grows this will change and Roadshow will be able to include some of these great extras on their own DVDs.....

Error about Columbia DVD Dual Format

It turns out that there was a slight miscommunication/confusion regarding the supposed upcoming DVDs from Columbia that would be Dual Layered Discs with a P&S and widescreen version of the movie.  Gattaca will be dual formatted, but is a double sided DVD and the rest of the March Line-up will only be single format (16:9 Enhanced)....So at this time, CTS (Australia) have no plans to start releasing DVDs in Both Formats where the disc is Dual Layered.....

South Park on Region 4 DVD

Although it may be some time before it is released (before mid 1999).   I was none the less, able to get some information on what we can expect to get as part of a South Park DVD.

Warner Vision will be the distributors of South Park in Australia, and they will be releasing the first two series.  There will be 3 episodes per DVD (approx 100 minutes), and included will be highlights from other Comedy Central skits and what not......no price is yet set for these DVDs
