| A While ago I mentioned that the Samsung DVD905 had a
problem where it would pause the image on PAL DVDs when you
activated the Dolby Digital track. Well Samsung have FINALLY seen this problem for
themselves using In The Line of Fire as a test disc. The guys in Korea were sent a
copy of this movie by a Samsung Tech in Sydney, and it turns out that the problem isn't
with the Dolby Digital Track, but rather the MPEG5.1 track....At first I was somewhat
puzzled by this finding but then it dawned on me that the other machines to also exibit
this problem are the Panasonic A100 and its clone the RCA DTH-1000. The one thing
that these 3 machines have in common is that they can't recognise the entire MPEG5.1
bitstream, whereas newer DVD players like the JVC can. I'm just hoping that they
have a work around for this as the 26 times Die hard 3 pauses gets a little annoying after
a while.... |

| I received word yesterday that Roadshow have released 2
movies for this month. Last Man Standing (New Line Cinema's
supposed take on "Yojinbo", the legendary japanese cult action film, Directed by
Akira Kurosawa, and the ABC Documentary Nature's Landscpapes. Last Man Standing features:
- Widescreen 16:9
- MPEG5.1 & DD5.1
- Trailer
- Bios
- Featurette
Roadshow also plan to ship 2 big releases for the month of
September, what they are is anyone's guess... |
28th August 1998
| With the lack of August releases from Columbia, they are
to somewhat make up for it by releasing 8 titles for the month of September, but not all
at once. The first 4 titles will be available 9th September and the remaining 4 on
the 22nd September. This is to allow the remaining releases to go back to the right
months. So the schedule seems to have been pushed forward one month them back one
month....great to see |
11th August 1998
| I received this info from a fellow HT'er with the explicit
instructions to post this great news..so Spizz here goes :-) Pioneer will release 2 models the DV-717 and the DV-515 in November
The DV-717 will feature:
THX Approval
DTS Compatible with DVD's
The DV-515 will feature:
DTS Compatible
No information availble if they will release them with
component inputs though one would think so. More information availble through
Pioneer Australia(Though they are very tight lipped)
Also another manufacturer Toshiba are planning also to
release 2 DVD models at the end of the year. One will feature DTS compatibilty.
And if that wasnt enough Toshiba will also be releasing 2
new rear projection screens a 43, and 44 inch models at around a November release date.
Though they are both 4:3 they do feature some cool
technologies for DVD users. The 43" will have Component inputs to match there already
existing component ready DVD player. But the more interesting information is that of the
44" model which as well as featurng Component inputs will also feature Progressive
Scan technology which up to now has only been available in the US. With a price of roughly
$9000 it will be expensive but for the DVD user will be the model of choice. |

Yesterday I received an e-mail from an "insider"
(now in the Witness protection program) about the Columbia Delays (click here) apparently the information I got hold of was not
entirely correct, so the following FAQ is from the original memo that detailed the reason
for the delays and lack of certain releases....Columbia DO STILL have there discs mastered
and duplicated in the US and this will be moving to Austria (the little place near
Germany:-) in the not too distant future. But, the plant in Austria is not complete yet.
The reason the August release date was aborted was actually in the interests of
customer service. The delays to the production of our 4 titles was due to the increasing
load (in line with the increasing demand for) in DVD production. This is why the Austrian
plant will be taking over the PAL mastering.Q:
How do we select our titles?
A: The reason why you do see things like SINGLE WHITE FEMALE on our release
schedule and not TOTAL RECALL is because the main criteria so far for selecting titles is
that SPE must own it throughout the world. TOTAL RECALL (like T2 and CLIFFHANGER) were
films made by Carolco and distributed by Columbia TriStar, but not in all territories. If
we are to go to the expense of authoring and releasing a title, at this stage it can only
be justified
if we can release it in all of out territories. Unfortunately something like THE FIFTH
ELEMENT also falls into this category and so goes to the end of the list. In other cases,
like BAD BOYS, there is a censorship issue. We released the film as an MA with no cuts,
but in other countries, the film was edited to obtain the required censor classification.
This creates a problem in that, although we have our own localised disc, all discs are
replicated together on one production run and it is not feasible to have multiple
versions.
==/==
If you thought that it was only films with extensive
violence that go under the knife then you might be surprised to know that it doesn't stop
there. Apparently in the upcoming release of MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING there will be
a slight change from the Australian theatrical release. At one stage in the movie Julia
Roberts says the "F" word (editorial intervention..sorry). In at least one of
the PAL countries this was edited out (probably at the local censors bidding to get the
required rating). This means to release the DVD at the same rating in that country the
same edit must be applied. This means all PAL countries now suffer this edit......it's
a shame they are altering the dialogue as it was bloody funny when she said it....... |

What a bummer 'ey.... Due to mastering problems on 2
un-named DVDs, Columbia have decided NOT to release to other 2 titles for
the month of August...so does this mean that we are getting some 8 titles released for
September ...NO....it means that ALL releases from Columbia have been
pushed back one month....It's disappointing to hear of this happening...one can only guess
that since the discs are now being manufactured in the UK instead of the USA (like the
first 4) the plant is suffering teething problems, I just hope it's not repeated on future
titles.
Speaking of future titles it appears that the issue of CENSORSHIP has once again raised
its ugly head. Everyone is well aware of the extremes the British Censorship board
goes to with violence in cinema, well it would appear that as a result, Columbia DVDs are
now being source from UK prints and as a result are the severely slaughtered versions not
seen to this extent in other countries. One film that comes under this heading is Bad
Boys. Apparently the UK release is quite different (being shorter) than the one
released in Australia with an MA rating, and as a result WILL NOT BE RELEASED HERE using
the UK transfer. Until Columbia start to manufacture DVDs from the Australian Plant
this will obviously happen with other titles too....I guess as an opposer to Censorship,
I'd rather see a movie delayed until I can see the movie as the director intended (or I
could get impatient and buy it from the States) |
31st July 1998
| Anyone with a Samsung DVD905 is probably aware of the
pausing problems associated with it. In an effort to get this annoying sync problem
fixed I got in touch with Samsung in Sydney who got in touch with Samsung in Korea who
sent some revised EPROMS to Sydney who then sent them to me to test out. Well
Unfortunately the problems are still there. A Dolby Digital Track on a PAL title
causes image pauses as if they are not in sync and cause the image to pause so that they
do play in sync (for a while). However, it did fix one other problem, and that was
reversing back into the first layer of an RSDL title. Originally when it reached the
beginning of the 2nd layer when reversing, the machine would lock up and you had to eject
the damn disc. Now it reverses back into the first layer beautifully, BUT with the
new EPROMS, any region 1 title with Macrovision will NOT play properly (ie no piccy,
and stuttering sound). Bound, a region 1 DVD without Macrovision DOES play
properly...so I've returned to using the old EPROMS.....Incidentally the chap at Samsung
in Sydney has since sent a few region 4 DVD's to a guy in Korea so he can see first hand
what the problem is and hopefully fix it...'cause it's a real pain in the arse...at
least the NTSC titles I have don't do it....hmmmmm |
1st July 1997
| With their upcoming titles, firstly on Long Kiss
Goodnight, Roadshow are to introduce a new way of detailing a discs features.
Rather than looking on the back cover for a red symbolised description, (obviously no
one there thought about those who are colour blind, or a male for that matter :-),
the disc information will be listed in a tickbox table, So if the movie is 16:9, MPEG5.1
and DD5.1, these features will be ticked as present on that disc. |
