While today would have been the perfect release date for these DVDs, the
press release announcing the 27th November Street date for Halloween 1 thru 3 was also a
good call. All Three DVDs sport remastered Widescreen Transfers and audio.
Though at Press time, as to whether any or all DVDs carry Anamorphic Widscreen
Transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio is uncertain. We're on the case don't worry!

Warner DVD Slicks Replacement
No No, we haven't recevied the slicks yet, but we've certainly been flooded
with email about this from you good folk (there's even been overseas interest in getting
replacment Slicks!!...hmmmm :). Seems Warner did the right thing ridding Australia
of the dreaded Snapper Case, and then going on step further with this Slicks Replacement
offer.
Which leads to our Latest Poll. If you're replacing your Snappers with Slicks How Many are you going to replace?

Let the Games Begin
DVD Australia have
released a few more interactive DVD games to the market. Similar in a way to the
very popular Dragon's Lair Arcade based games, are Choose Your Own Nightmare : The
Curse of the Mummy, and Ace Ventura - Pet Detective : The Case
of the Serial Shaver.
Using your DVD Remote Control you can run these DVDs thru your Stand alone DVD Player by
choosing from the on-screen options (which lead to a few hundred possible gaming paths to
go down). There's over 50,000 frames of animation, you're looking at alomost 30 minutes of
footage.
These DVD games have just been released to OZ and are currently available from EZY DVD carrying a
price of $32.95
See below for some piccys.
Latest DVD Slicks and Menus
A few new covers have been added to the Slicks
& Menus page today.
Looking for Alibrandi, Magnolia, Barney's Night before Christmas, Ace Ventura (game),
Curse of the Mummy (game), What a Blast, and a few menu shots from the upcoming GLADIATOR
DVD.
Roadshow DVDetails
Due for DVD Release tomorrow (on old hallow's day) are Looking for
Alibrandi, and Magnolia.
Looking for Alibrandi, this year Aussie gem, leading up to The Dish,
comes to us with an Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1, Director's
Commentary, photo gallery, storyboards & working script excerpts, music videos, and a
deleted scene with commentary....nice
Magnolia is Roadshow's First Movie to come in a 2 disc set, mainly due to the 180
minute running time of the feature, which is Anamorphic Widescreen and is Dolby Digital
5.1 and 2.0 encoded.
On the second Mag. disc we get the Frank t.j mackay seminar, mackey info, trailers, tv
sopts, music video, magnolia diary, making of doco, and ..errr colour bars??...
Being a two disc set, the Suggested retail price is a slightly higher $39.95 ($5 up from
Roadshow's Standard DVD Price)
Apparently, P.T. Anderson (writer/director) had FULL
control over this region 4 DVD release (as he did for EVERY DVD release of Magnolia), so i
gotta wonder why the bloody hell there are only 12 chapters for a friggin' three hour
movie! oy!

Crapper Cases, be gone!!!
I don't think there were too many DVD'ers out there who weren't shocked,
amazed and thrilled to bits when WARNER Australia announced they were scrapping the
snapper, in favour of the lovely clean and clear Amaray Case.
No longer will some of you who HATE and DETEST the cardboard casing so much have to
continue to hack these cases to pieces in order to fit them into a clear case like the
lovely amaray.
Very Late last night we received an email from Warner's DVD Product Manager, Tracy
Whybrew, asking us if we'd like to be one of a few region 4 DVD sites to take on the role
of supplying FREE REPLACEMENT WARNER DVD SLICKS to anyone in region 4
land who bought WARNER DVDS (which came in the dreaded Snapper Case)!
FREE can you believe that???
We've of course said HELL YES! and seeing as we also sell Clear Amaray Cases as well as the DVD Case Cover designed specifically
for the Snapper Case are going to offer a special deal or two to tie in with this
incredibly generous offer from the WARNER Australia Clan.Chris Till over at DVD
Plaza tells me that he also received word from Warner about this and also
plans to distribute the Warner DVD Slicks from his site (so that's 2 :). From what
i've heard, the DVD Plaza Forum aka the Discussion
Cafe' had a lot to do with this happening in Australia, seeing as so many
Aussie DVDer's frequent his site and Cafe'.
No date was specified as to when any of the sites involved
will receive these slicks for distribution, but rest assured, you'll know as soon as we
do!
Nice going Warner Australia...
CTHV/Universal January 2001 Release Specs
My god they're right up on it! It wasn't long ago we didn't get release
info until a few weeks before the actual release, now we're looking at some three months
warning! (hang on while i go check for pigs flying past my window!! :)
Toplining their 4th January Releases is the Mel Gibson
civil war vehicle The Patriot (or as i like to call it, The Independence Day version of
Braveheart! :). It'll be interesting to see, if like the region 1 version of the
Patriot, as to whether ours also includes this "new" Regional Code Enhancement
feature (RCE). Apparently RCE is causing a few problems across the
board with only some multizoned players rejecting the disc. (toshy's have faired the
worse, some Panasonics don't like it one bit, the pioneer 626 is supposedly a-okay whereas
their previous model, the DV717 spews it out! )
Anyhoo, in addition to the Patriot is Loser, Flintstones :Viva Rock Vegas, Stand By ME :
Collector's Edition, Black & White, and Papillion

Everyone Wants Their Cut!!
If there's one word in the English dictionary that really pisses me off, it's
"censorship". While I have quite a high tolerance for many things
(occupational hazard unfortunately), I get somewhat annoyed when I find out a movie was
cut for either ratings reasons or just plain ol' censoring!
It's Ironic that the censoring a film makes one want to see blood!! :) Anyhoo, after receiving the latest specs on the FOX DVDs (posted
Yesterday) I received an e-mail from a chap by the name of "Brendan" asking if
our Fight Club DVD was to be the UK cut version or not!
Now I'm wishing he didn't e-mail as I popped on over to the BBFC On-line database and
nearly died when Fight Club, The Abyss, Braveheart AND Edward
Scissorhands, ALL came up as being cut for UK Cinema AND VIDEO!
Now before you get all pissed off like I did and start smashing your computer telly!
(PCs have feeling to you know!..though they suffer from short term memory :), FOX
Author more than 1 DVD version for PAL regions, as I soon discovered doing some
net searching.
Even so, we're not sure if the Australian releases of the above mentioned films will be
the exact same UK versions, OR European Uncut versions. We're waiting for
confirmation on this from 20th Century Fox.
OH and get this!! On the Very recently released
Region 2/4 Lost World DVD a SUPPLEMENTAL WAS CENSORED!
Click here for a direct link to the Lost World BBFC Page
(2 deleted scenes on the 2nd disc of Fight Club are also MIA, though this is more likely
from PAL taking up more disc space..I mean they let through the "extra" )
Ever noticed on a WARNER DVD the digits 'D1', 'D2' or 'D3'. Turns out that these are
to do with differing areas where Warner release their DVDs and pretty much determine if
they're cut or uncut versions of a particular movie on DVD.
If you pop over to an excellent site called UK DVD CUTS you can get all the skinny on exactly
what DVDs have been cut and by how much (though they are really aimed at the region 2 UK
market), upcoming cut DVDs and all about these DVD disc zones.
I have to say, not all cuts are bad, some are in fact very
well done like the gun-to-the-head sequence in the MA15+ theatrical Aussie cut of Three
Kings (Roadshow released the UNCUT version to DVD..see! they understand!).
I still disagree with Censoring movies, especially IF they are carry the 18+ rating to
begin with, whether that being in Australia, the UK or anywhere.
Quite frankly if this is happens to a DVD released in Australia, nine times out of ten
I'll be buying the USA version! (unless of course that movie is Scream in which case I'll
just suffer and dream about that anamorphic Widescreen uncut German version that I'll
never be able to get as you can't buy 18+ German moofies over the Internet :)
BTW you know the recent controversial
release in OZ of the NTSC formatted Region 4 DVD version of ROMEO MUST DIE?
The BBFC On-line database revealed that this movie was cut by 30 seconds to get the UK15
rating, and I'm thinking that Warner might have thought, hmmmm, let's release the UNCUT
version in Australia, which is why ours was NTSC. (please note that is pure
speculation at this time, but we have asked Warner if this is the case and are waiting for
a reply, though the quote below is also kinda convincing)
Quoted from UK
DVD CUTS
New Warner release 'Romeo Must Die' is cut by 30 seconds at the studio's request, to bring
the rating down to '15' instead of '18'. Uncut R2 versions will be available in all other
countries next year, R1 disc is already available! (Added 01/08/00, updated 08/10/00)
.......More to come on the issue of movie censorship

Boxing Day MOVED To November
20th Century FOX are set to release a few whoppers to DVD this November, and
they're all TV series DVD Box sets!!. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Files
and StarGate SG1.
The Buffy Box Set contains ALL 12 Episodes of Season 1 and comes on 3 DVDs. X-Files
is all season 1 on 7 DVDs! AND SG1 is Volume 1 with 4 episodes. Unlike Buffy
and X-Files which are 4x3 Full Frame, SG1 comes to us in all its ANAMORPHIC
WIDESCREEN GLORY!!!
For all the dirt, click the links below to go to the DVD Release Schedule Pages.FOX DVD Releases
It seems FOX are going out with all guns blazing this November with one hell
of a DVD lineup!!!
This November sees the release of the long waited James Cameron [semi-Epic] The
Abyss in BOTH theatrical and Extended cuts, with amples of goodies, Independence
Day also gets the special edition treatment with a 2 disc release!. Fight
Club (the DVD that WAS RELEASED in OZ 6 months ago as ...gasp...RENTAL ONLY gets
the 2 disc treatment also (though we're only getting the 1 comm track whereas the USA got
a whopping FOUR commentary tracks!!...).(check out the final segment of the "behind
the Scenes listed on this DVD"!!...oooh-mah!)
And Mel Gibson's Oscar Winning Braveheart comes to us with a commentary
and a 2nd special features Disc.
Sadly, Only Fightclub is listed as being Anamorphic
Widescreen. The screen format information supplied for The Abyss and ID4 was a
little vague and we're waiting for a reply from FOX as to whether these DVDs are in fact
Anamorphic Widescreen (seeing as everything else FOX has been releasing is! )
On the comedy side of things, Mel Brook's excruciatingly funny Young Frankenstein
comes as a Special Edition AND is listed as being Anamorphic Widescreen.
Edward Scissorhands and Planet of the Apes say the same thing!!!

MGM DVD Releases
Thru FOX, MGM are set to release 4 Special Edition Anamorphic Widescreen
JAMES BOND DVDs this November.
Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun and The Spy
Who Loved Me are all loaded to the hilt with featurettes and commentaries.

HERE for the INFOGRAMES PRESS RELEASE
With the exception of ...grrr. Paramount, all the major
Studios will have started releasing DVDs to OZ before the end of 2000. Along the way
though have been a few "smaller" players in the DVD Stakes, like DVD Australia
who offer and incredibly broad range of DVDs, to Queensland based Magna Pacific who have
only really just started to up the ante' on their DVDs with the likes of the upcoming
release of the chocka-block filled Man on the Moon DVD.
The latest player in the DVD stakes is software company INFOGRAMES, who I
had never heard of until receiving the press release, but turn out to be a pretty big
player in the arena of interactive software.
Horror fans of DVD-Land will no doubt drool when they see some the Classic titles
mentioned in the Press Release.
Though little information regarding these titles was mentioned in this press release, I
decided to follow up on this and dropped a few e-mails to the Infogrames Promotions
Manager in Australia, Rebecca Simpson who had this to say.
"We'll be primarily releasing region 4 titles, but some of the
products we have are open region. Our focus is to release genuine PAL products for the
region 4 market."
"Great to hear that you're excited
about the Halloween movies we'll be releasing, being such cult slasher films we want to do
them justice and release the best versions we can get our hands on. At this stage I don't
have final confirmation of the specs, so I'm afraid I can't pass on many details."
"Where it's financially viable and
available we're looking to release Widescreen versions as well as 5.1
sound. Obviously not all titles we release will warrant such extensive
remastering, but we're doing our best to source as much added value for our products as we
can.
"We'd be planning to release 16:9 Widescreen if we can source that version."
Universal to Distribute DVDreamworks!!
Click
HERE for the DREAMWORKS PRESS RELEASE
From the way things were going, I was thinking Columbia or
The NEW Universal!. The New Universal won out!
Though no actual date was announced, fingers crossed it'll be late this year that we'll
start to see a few Dreamworks titles hit the shelves. Dreamworks DVDs will be
authored to cater for the Australian, NZ and European territories. so please please
please, let's hope NONE go under the censors knife!
CLOCKING UP some 30 years
For nearly 30 years the only way to see Stanley Kubricks A Clockwork Orange
in Australia and the UK, was to see it at the moofies, usually as part of a midnight
screening the very occasional "limited release" OR import it from Overseas
on..gasp VHS, or more recently on DVD, all because it was DENIED Video release at the
hands of Kubrick himself (at least that is what I believe is the deal with this moofy)!
HOWEVER, I am assuming because the poor fellow is dead, Warner are set to release this
curiously unusual film to DVD in Australia, on 6th November. No Specs are available
just yet, but in usual Kubrick fashion this film was shot in the 1.66:1 format (the USA
DVD version is 1.66:1 4x3 matted!) Check out the DVDFile Region 1 Review which mentions a few things
about this.

Paramount DVDELAYS!
It's sad, but true! You won't be getting any PARAMOUNT DVDs in your Region 4
Stocking this year.
The Initial plan was for Paramount to Launch DVD to the Aussie Market in time for
Christmas, with Mission : Implausible 2 being the Lead title.
Unfortunately when M:I2 comes to Video in January, the DVD won't even be date and Day with
VHS, as at this time, it's due for a DVD release in MARCH 2001!So it'll be a another good 5 month til we see any paramount DVDs in
OZ :(
Warner's The Perfect Storm DVD should sound
EX-cellent
With a release set just in time for Christmas (19th December) The box office
smash hit/George Clooney Vehicle The Perfect Storm comes to us with label of the
first Aussie OFFICIAL Dolby-EX 5.1 Mix! Upon speaking to Warner, the only
info they had at this time was that Warner O/S told them it's coming in 6.1 baby!
Caught up in the moment I immediately asked if they meant it was to be a Discrete DTS 6.1
mix, but no, it's in Dolby Digital-EX 5.1 :( It's gonna sound great though.
Unfortunately there are no other specs available for this DVD at press time, but rest
assured we'll find out soon. As is trend with a majority of the WARNER DVDs,
"Storm" should be presented on DVD in a very similar manor to its USA Cousin.
Warner/BV Big Releases til Feb 20001
As for the Rest of Warners/BV's Big DVDs Cass will be jumping jumping
jumping with the news that The Tigger Movie (that's spelt
T-I-G-G-rrrrrr:) is set for a 1st of November Release.
Fantasia 2000 and the Original Fantasia are coming at
the end of November, along with the Little Mermaid 2
Oliver Stone's overlooked football movie Any Given Sunday is being given
the Deluxe treatment with a 2 box DVD set, and is due out in January 2001.
And one of my favourite leave your brain at the door films for 2000, Gone in 60
Seconds races its way to DVD in February 2001. (please note these dates may
change! :)
EXORCIST get's Pulled off the Shelves....Spew'n!
Have you heard that William Friedkin was given the chance to go back and
re-tweak his Oscar winning film "The Exorcist" ?
Well THIS MONTH sees the Theatrical Release of this new version in OZ and
is being Distributed here by Roadshow's Theatrical Department (they actually release
ALL of Warner's and BV's movies to theatres),
Expect to see a biiig push for this movie. I saw the New trailer in Sydney the other
week and it looked awesome, BUT I have heard that this new version may have been a bit
"overdone" to bring it up to the "naughties" (one scene
reportedly has blood completely splattering the screen!) as well as quite a few other CGI
added sequences!
Anyhoo, the original Warner DVD of the Exorcist had been put on Moratorium, as they're
doing a Lucas and will be releasing the NEW version to DVD sometime next year. So if
you're a purist get in QUICK to buy up one the last remaining copies of the original
before it's too late!
Magna Set to Release a few Anamorphic Widescreen
DVDs
After a few lacklustre titles from Magna, I was thrilled to bits to see that
at least a couple of their pre-Xmas DVDs will not only have quite a few goodies added, BUT
will the Video side of it will be sources from Anamorphic Widescreen Masters.!!!
While there are still a few too many 4x3 framed DVDs coming from Magna, they have at least
recognised the wants and needs of Aussie DVDs and are willing to give us what many of us
want n a few of their great titles.
Sadly, Scream is NOT one of these titles and is coming only 4x3
Panned and Scanned. As Wes Craven's first foray into shooting films in
SCOPE (2.35:1) the VHS version of SCREAM that I have seen suffers greatly from cropping
and the DVD will be the same with a loss of some 43 percent of the overall image!!!
BTW the RELEASE DATE for SCREAM had been bumped back a few days to 10th November.
So which DVDs will Magna release in all their Anamorphic Widescreen Glory?
One is the excellent and severely underrated Andy Kaufman bio "Man on the
Moon" (click HERE for even more specs)
and the other (which I must say was a tad surprising, but I
understand to be an excellent film-ish) The Buena Vista Social Club.
Like Moon, BVSC comes with a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix and as extras materials has
"special footage", whatever that means.
More Magna DVDetails
I have to say the it's been difficult to get much info out of some of our
Aussie Studios, even after several years of releasing DVDs in this country. Granted
Most have ties with the bigger overseas studios and so even the Aussie divisions have some
difficulty finding out what each DVD contains from mum and dad! So when Magna sent
us a very detailed spreadsheet of their DVDs being released til the end of November, it
was quite a shock.
With a slight release Date Delay, SCREAM, Human Traffic, Buena Vista Social Club, Dirty
Dancing, and Man on the Moon are all now coming out on the 10th November, so we're only
talking about a few days more.
Human Traffic comes to us with a 4x3 transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track,
Cast Interviews, Bios, Theatrical Trailer, Music Video, and what's called a "random
music selector" hmmmmm. OH and it has listed that the menus are moving!
While you will find a majority of the specs by clicking
HERE, Below is a list of each DVDs menu formats (just in case you're
interested)
- Scream - Moving Menus
- Virus - Still Menus
- Man on the Moon - Moving Menus
- Dirty Dancing : CE - Moving Menus
- Human Traffic - Moving
- Buena Vista SC - Moving

So do you like the new look? :)
Yes it's changed it AGAIN! But do you like it? Hope so. Cass tells me
she's not overly fond of the Blue Menu to your Left, but err, I think we'll leave it at
that as I don't want to get in trouble now :))
We've made a few tweaks here and there (and god is it a pain to accomodate for 256 colours
& 16 millions colours, 800x600 & 1024x768, Internet Explorer & Netscape!!
ARRRRRRGH!!! ) and while only the newest pages have changed at the moment,
we'll change more of them over to the "new" look as time permits.
A couple of things you may notice is that to the top right of the "changed
pages" is a Quick Links section. The idea of this is to
put the most relevant info to the current page in this very spot. So with you
currently being on the DAILY NEWS page, the above left links are NEWS related. If
you goto one of today's DVD Reviews, you will find Quick Links to the
region 4 review areas.
More DTS DVDs from DVD Australia
So how many times have you seen Super Speedway and though, hmmm, wouldn't
this be nice in DTS?????
Well, you'll just have to keep on dreaming!! But in the meantime, you way well want
to pick up a copy of "Super Racers".
DVD Australia are just about ready to release this NTSC import, and it DOES have a DTS5.1
track, as well as a Dolby Digital 5.1 & 2.0 tracks.
Not only that but the picture is also ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN! price is
said to be around $35 and should be out next week.
What a Blast - 2 Disc set.
Combineing both the Demolitions and Architecture in Motion DVDs is this 2 disc set
jobbie, priced at around $40. it'll be coming in the Alpha double case (same as the
inital batch of Ultimate Demo DVD). Tangarine Dream have composed the score for
"motion" and both DVDs have a DTS5.1, DD5.1 and DD2.0 audio tracks.....nice!After a loooooong delay, Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera comes
to DVD in OZ (NTSC format).
Surprisingly, this one is in the dual ratio format. So one side is Panned &
Scanned and the other 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Audio format is
Dolby Digital 5.1, and in the extras department we get a photo gallery, Filmograhpies,
Trailers, Fangoria Article, interview with the Phantom (Julian 'warlock' Sands), and
behind the scenes featurette. Priced at around $35, Dario's version of phantom
should be out next week, AND it's the uncut version! sweeeeeet.
